How to Make Your Teen a Better Driver

Putting your teenager behind the wheel can be a nerve-racking experience. It’s understandable to be worried; in 2022, 2,514 people were killed in crashes involving a teen driver, according to the NHTSA. Teenagers are three times more likely to get into a car accident than those aged 20 and older. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to help your teen become a safer driver. Here are some tips to consider:

Tip 1: Drive with Them When They Get Their Permit

“To help your teen stay safe behind the wheel, all 50 states and the District of Columbia have a three-stage graduated driver licensing (GDL) system that limits high-risk driving situations for new drivers. This approach can reduce your teen’s crash risk by as much as 50%.”US Department of Transportation.

The first stage requires a licensed adult to be in the vehicle at all times. Use that time to ride with your teen and discuss safe driving habits. Ask them questions about possible scenarios and have them practice driving in a variety of weather and traffic conditions.

Tip 2: No Phones When They Drive

Enforcing the no-texting-and-driving rule is essential. Teens should keep their phones in the center console on silent to avoid distractions. Most importantly, set a good example by not using your phone while driving, as children learn by observing their parents.

Tip 3: Limit the Passenger Count When They Drive

While it’s important for teens to learn how to drive with passengers, limit the number of teenage friends in the car while they’re still learning. Start with one passenger and gradually increase the number as they become more experienced at tuning out distractions.
