How to Make Your Teen a Better Driver

If you want your teen to be as safe as possible when they drive, make sure that you take these tips into consideration.

Putting your teenager, the child you have been raising since before they could speak, behind the wheel of a car is a very nerve-racking experience. Teenagers are three times more likely to get into a car accident than those aged 20 and older. Luckily for you and parents everywhere, there are a few things that you can do to help prepare them for the road. Before they spread their wings and leave the nest, or house rather, take these tips on how to make your teen a better driver.

Tip I: Drive with them when they acquire their permit.

A study conducted by the University of North Carolina’s Highway Safety Research Center found that there is a sharp decline in accidents for individual teenagers who drove 110 hours with supervised driving before getting their licenses. The risk of accidents for rookie drivers is far greater than the veteran driver.

Tip II: No phones when they drive.

We all know the law: No texting and driving. Irresponsibly, however, we all break the law, even adult drivers. Teens should keep their phones in the center console on silent as to not draw their attention. Children learn by example, so be a role model and do not fiddle with your phone when you are behind the wheel.

Tip III: Limit the passenger count when they drive.

They will have to learn how to drive with passengers in the car, but when they are still learning, limit that teenage passenger friend to one, and increase it by increments of one once they learn how to tune out distracting teenage ruckus.

Your kids will be independent one day and it’s your job to help them prepare them for the toughness of the adult world. For quality auto insurance that will keep you, your teen, and your car protected from all covered perils, contact CAV Insurance today.
